The crux of the matter is this: Commercial IT certifications give employers exactly what they’re looking for – the title is a complete giveaway: as an example – I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Managing and Maintaining Windows Server 2003′. Consequently companies can identify exactly what they need and which qualifications are required to fulfil that.

Looking around, we find a myriad of employment in Information Technology. Picking the right one out of this complexity is generally problematic.

How can most of us possibly understand the tasks faced daily in an IT career when we haven’t done that before? Most likely we haven’t met someone who does that actual job anyway.

Reflection on these factors is imperative if you want to reveal a solution that suits you:

* Your personality can play a major role – what kind of areas spark your interest, and what are the things that put a frown on your face.

* Why it seems right starting in computing – maybe you’d like to conquer a long-held goal such as firing your boss and working for yourself maybe.

* Is the money you make further up on your priority-list than other requirements.

* Looking at the many markets that computing covers, you really need to be able to take in what’s different.

* You will need to understand the differences across each area of training.

For most people, considering each of these concepts tends to require the help of someone who can investigate each area with you. And not just the qualifications – you also need to understand the commercial needs and expectations also.

The area most overlooked by those mulling over a new direction is the issue of ‘training segmentation’. Basically, this means the way the course is divided up for timed release to you, which can make a dramatic difference to where you end up.

Most companies will sell you a program typically taking 1-3 years, and courier the materials in pieces as you finish each section. This sounds reasonable until you consider the following:

What if you don’t finish all the sections or exams? Maybe the prescribed order won’t suit you? Through no fault of your own, you mightn’t complete everything fast enough and not get all the study materials as a result.

Put simply, the best option is to obtain their recommendation on the best possible order of study, but to receive all the materials up-front. You then have everything in the event you don’t complete everything as fast as they’d like.
